Christmas 2011

Christmas for us was a three day event. It all started last week when we did our cousin gift exchange. The kids each had one cousin to buy a gift for, and then we met at Aunt Brooke's house to party! We started out by eating lots of yummy food and then we played about a million rounds of BINGO. The kids loved it.

Then the kids exchanged presents.

A few of the older cousins. They are all best friends and have been for years. There is something extra special about being cousins and growing up together. It creates such a strong bond.

Will got his favorite gift of the year - dinosaurs. He hasn't put them down for days. He's trying to give cousin Easton a thank you kiss.



Then we acted out the nativity. My mom put together a great program and brought all the kids costumes. It was slick and the kids had a great time. Morgan was an angel and Miles was Joseph.

Next came Christmas Eve. This is the big family celebration where everyone comes and we celebrate a Danish Christmas. All my sibling and their families were there - there where 51 of us crammed inside my moms house!!! In Denmark (where my mom was born and raised until she was 8) the kids put their shoes under the bed and while they eat dinner the Julenisse (the Danish version of Santa) leaves gifts in their shoe. Here are the kids after dinner lining up at Grandma's bedroom door to see if the Julenisse came.

Sure enough, each child's shoe had a gift! This was my favorite part of Christmas growing up and I love seeing my kids experience the same thing.

Then we went home to get ready for the real Santa to come. We started out with our traditional Christmas Eve jammies. The kids requested footed sleepers this year.

This year Morgan and Miles made Mike and I gifts at school. Miles made us a calendar and took these pictures of us opening it. They both made ornaments for the tree too!! Super cute.

This year the older kids got a DS. They've wanted some kind of video game thing for a couple years now and we finally caved.

Then we spent all of Christmas day playing with toys.

We also made our traditional pull-a-parts for Christmas breakfast. YUM! It makes me think of Mike's mom - she taught me how to make these. We really missed seeing Mike's family on Christmas. We've spent the past decade having Christmas with them in Ohio and we definitely felt the void of having them so far away.

Here's Will eating his third helping. Just our little group ate this huge plate of pull-a-parts. This was all that was left after breakfast (but it was gone before dinner :) Our favorite.

I love this time of year. This year as our family has grown, I've felt especially blessed to have such wonderful children and an amazing husband who works so hard to provide for all of us. I don't think he'll ever fully know how much it means to me to stay home with our kids - and it's all because of his willingness to work hard and provide for us. I also feel so blessed because of the knowledge I have of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I am so thankful for this time of year to celebrate His birth and more importantly the life He lived. And because of Him, if I am willing to do my part, I can return with my family to our Heavenly Father someday. That is the greatest gift I have and will ever receive.

Meg at 6 weeks

She's a wise-guy

Yesterday the kids were outside playing in the backyard. Miles was kicking around a soccer ball and Morgan and her friend were crawling around on the grass pretending to be dogs. Miles usually doesn't pay much attention to where he's kicking the ball, so it's not surprising that he kicked the ball right into Morgan's face knocking out her bottom tooth. She spent the next 20 minutes crying and searching the grass for her lost tooth. Luckily it was already loose and I think the crying was out of shock and not being able to find the missing tooth instead of because she was in pain. The good news is, she found her tooth. The bad news is, (actually I mean the sad news is) she doesn't believe in the tooth fairy anymore... (or santa, or anything like that.) She informed us before going to bed that she knows it's us and there is no tooth fairy. We teased her a bit and joked that there really is a tooth fairy and she has no idea what she's talking about. When Mike went in to leave her money he came back laughing and showed me this note that was sitting next to Morgan's pillow... She's such a wise guy!

The sweetest gift ever!!

Yesterday I picked the kids up from from school, dropped off the car pool and drove home. Once we pulled into the garage, I unbuckled Will and the kids jumped out like usual... Except for Morgan. When I went to close the car door I noticed she was still sitting in the back of the van... crying... silently. It was the saddest cry I've seen in a long time. I quickly grabbed her and started hugging her thinking something terrible had happened at school. When I asked her what was wrong she said, "it broke". When I asked her what broke she said, "yours and Dad's Christmas present". Then she held it out and said, "I don't even want to give it to you anymore". When I saw the Santa she made that now had a broken leg, I thought it was the CUTEST, SWEETEST thing I'd ever seen.

Her heartfelt tears over the broken candy cane was what made this gift so special. I'll never forget the genuine sadness on her face or the silent way she cried. The funny thing is, that is what made the gift so memorable. I wonder if I would have loved it as much if it hadn't broken... I doubt it.

Christmas Choir Concert

This year Morgan joined the Christmas choir with her friend Sadie. This meant she had to get up early once a week and go to school early for practice... not easy for my girl that loves to sleep in. Although it was totally worth it and she loved it.
This week she had her Christmas concert and it was adorable!
